'Episode 80: Kidney Health Tips: Summer Tips for Kidney Patients. Don\'t let the warm weather keep you from enjoying summer and improving your kidney health. Here are 6 summertime tips for kidney health: 1. Get outside and move for Kidney Health. Sunny days are great for going out, getting some exercise, and soaking in the sun’s rays for Vitamin D and kidney health. From gardening, to walking, to playing with the kids or family pet – outdoor exercise is great for helping work off stress and getting your blood pumping. One last note, it’s usually best to avoid being outside from 10am to 2pm – this tends to be the hottest part of the day with the strongest rays from the sun. 2. Stay Hydrated for Kidney Health. It’s easy to forget about fluids and dehydration is not good for those concerned with their kidney health. Always remember to bring along some water to sip regularly to stay hydrated. For those on a fluid restriction, avoid too much sun and heat by wearing a hat, hanging out in the shade, and using a water mister. 3. Protect your skin. Unprotected sun exposure can cause skin damage and increase the potential for skin cancer. When possible, cover up with a shirt, hat, or by sitting in the shade. And always wear sunscreen. A Zinc Oxide based sunscreen is great for kidney patients. I use Coppertone Pure & Simple: https://amzn.to/2YXfJFH 4. Protect your eyes. Sunglasses protect your eyes just like sunscreen protects your skin. Sunglasses should block at least 99% of UVB rays and 50% of UVA rays. 5. Keep an eye on food portions for Kidney Health. It’s easy to enjoy several nice thick slices of watermelon or other summer foods, and it’s easy to lose track of how much you are eating. Many summertime foods tend to be high in phosphorus or potassium, so keep tabs on the portions you are enjoying. And when you need to decide between something natural and something processed – pick the natural. Remember, we absorb 80-100% of phosphorus in food additives. 6. Watch the sodium for Kidney Health. Many summer snacks are salty. From pretzels to chips, I even grew up salting my watermelon. It’s best to avoid or greatly limit the salty snacks – it’ll help keep your sodium intake in check and salty foods make you thirsty.
